|At US Citizen Watch, our goal is to enable conservative and pro-family men and women to participate in the process of self-government and public-policy making so that America will continue to be a land of individual liberty, respect for family, integrity, public and private virtue, and private enterprise.
By being informed, as citizens, we can affect government policies in Congress, state legislatures, city councils and school boards; elect candidates at every level; and articulate conservative and pro-family policies through media.
We hope you will join us in those efforts!
Why oppose LR6?
Points in Opposition to NEBRASKA LR6
I. How would LR6 change the U.S. Constitution?
LR6 is an application to Congress from Nebraska for Congress to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution to propose amendments, supposedly to limit the federal government. When Congress determines they have received 34 state applications, they are to call a convention; four states have passed “Convention of States”-sponsored applications to date.
“Convention of States Project (COS),” the sponsors of LR6, claim that the federal government has usurped the legitimate role of the States in the Constitution. They claim there are two Constitutions, the one we all know and love; and the one we are living under, as interpreted by the Supreme Court.
But this shows that the problem is not the Constitution; but that the Supreme Court violates it! In Federalist No 81 (8th paragraph), Hamilton says the remedy for federal judges who usurp power is to impeach them and remove them from the bench!
If the existing words are clear but the Supreme Court Opinions are wrong, how exactly would the Delegates to an Article V Convention change those words? Or how would amendments restore the "true" meaning of the Constitution: by expressly overturning the Supreme Court that "got it wrong"? And why would the courts comply with an amended Constitution when they twist definitions to avoid complying with the Constitution we have now?

Article V Convention: What They Are Not Telling You - Video
Here is a great video that explains what is so dangerous about the "Article V Convention" being pushed by the Convention of States project. In Nebraska, the effort is LR6!
Listen to the video - and then call the State Senators! Tell them we want them to protect our Constitution and vote NO to LR6!

Arthur Goldberg, Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court: “As we look forward to celebrate the bicentennial of the constitution, a few people have asked, why not another constitutional convention. I would respond that one of the most serious problems Article 5 poses is a runaway convention. There is no enforceable mechanism to prevent a convention from reporting wholesale changes to our constitution and Bill of Rights. Moreover, the absence of any mechanism to ensure representative selection of delegates could put a runaway convention in the hands of single issue groups whose self-interest may be contrary to our national well- being.”
Former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Warren Burger: “I have also repeatedly given my opinion that there is no way to limit or muzzle the actions of a constitutional convention. The convention could make its own rules and set its own agenda. Congress might try to limit the convention to one amendment or one issue, but there is no way to assure that the convention would obey. After a Convention begins it will be too late to stop the convention if we do not like its agenda.”
“Whatever gain might be hoped for from a new constitutional convention could not be worth the risk involved. A new convention could plunge our nation into constitutional confusion and confrontation at every turn with no focus on the subject needing attention. I have discouraged the idea of a Constitutional convention. And I am glad to see states rescinding their previous resolutions requesting a convention. In these bicentennial years we should be celebrating its long life, not challenging its very existence.”

Convention of States (COS) explains what LR6 would do
Here is a great video explaining what the Convention of states resolution will do. This is the same resolution that is being introduced in Nebraska through LR6. To date, the hearing for LR6 has not been scheduled. When it is, it will be important for you to show up and hopefully you will testify as to why we do not want to place our Constitution "at risk".
Robert Kelly, staff counsel for convention of states, explains that the resolution opens every section of the US Constitution. This is exactly why we say the resolution is an assault on our constitution.

Introduced Legislation - Nebraska Unicameral 2017
Included here are some of the legislation introduced in Nebraska's 2017 Legislature. Bill numbers are hyper-linked so you can read the bill for yourself. The second column may contain a "Y" or "N", indicating whether we support passage of the bill. If a hearing date has been identified, it is listed along with a short reason for our support or lack of support.

Our U.S. Constitution Is Under Attack - Your Help Is Needed!
A very dangerous move is underfoot in the Nebraska Legislature. Senator Ebke introduced LR6 calling for an Article V convention “limited to proposing amendments to the Constitution of the United States that impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit the power and jurisdiction of the federal government, and limit the terms of office for its officials and for members of Congress”. A hearing has yet to be scheduled -but in the meantime, it is important that you contact your Senator - and other Senators.
Why are some asking for an Article V Convention? People are understandably frustrated with the over-reach of the federal government and the tremendous debt being foisted upon our children and grandchildren. But - with a new President and many new Congressmen, we need to demand they enforce our U.S. Constitution - not call a new convention that will bring a re-write. Unfortunately talk radio host and lawyer Mark Levin’s book, The Liberty Amendments, has been promoted an Article V convention as the last, one great hope for our Nation.
Levin’s book outlines eleven possible amendments to the U.S. Constitution that he touts as the “magic bullet” to bring our run-away government back under the control of the People. No doubt Levin means well and his proposed amendments do sound good, but in his desire to right all ills, Levin is failing to accurately read Article V of the Constitution.

Was Nebraska student diagnosed with TB in November a refugee?
Posted by Ann Corcoran on December 11, 2016
That is what we would like to know! Michael Patrick Leahy of Breitbart is on the case. I know most of you are reading Breitbart (right!), but I wanted to be sure we get this latest Tuberculosis news posted to keep our ‘Health Issues’ category up to date.
A student enrolled at Benson Magnet High School, one of seven high schools in the Omaha, Nebraska Public Schools system, was diagnosed with active tuberculosis (TB) in November.
Two hundred thirty seven of Benson Magnet High School’s 1,273 students, or 18.6 percent, are refugees, according to Omaha Public School’s District English Language Learner/Refugee Report, 2015-16.
Officials with the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services and the Douglas County Public Health Department are withholding whether the student was foreign-born or American-born.
A number of Omaha’s refugee students were born in countries burdened by TB; Myanmar/Burma (617), Nepal (186), Somalia (140), and Bhutan (84).
As Breitbart News reported previously, foreign-born residents of Nebraska accounted for 82 percent of all cases of TB diagnosed in the state in 2014, much higher than the national average of 66 percent….

I’m wondering if the problems with the US Refugee Admissions Program will hit home once families in resettlement towns and cities find that their kids have to be tested for TB!
And, I’ve wondered for a long time if volunteers who work with refugees are given instructions on how to stay safe and keep their families safe when interfacing with newly arrived refugees. Does anyone know? (For new readers: Yes we admit refugees with TB.)

More test positive for tuberculosis at Benson High School
After finding a student at Benson High Magnet School with active tuberculosis (Tb), 191 additional students and faculty had to be tested. The results? An addition 7 individuals tested positive for Latent Tb.
According to medical personnel we checked with, latent Tb can become active at anytime. It is also notable that refugees make up a signigicant portion of the Benson student body.

Nine Myths from the "Convention of States" Project
By Judi Caler
Rita Dunaway, staff counsel for the Convention of States Project ( COS), wrote an article, Five Myths about Article Five, which turns the Constitution on its ear. Ironically, her article challenges five premises that are true, while invoking at least nine myths of her own.
In fact, the very name "convention of states;' is being used by Article V convention advocates to deceive state legislators into thinking an Article V convention can be controlled by state legislatures; it cannot.
